Hello all.

A group of students have asked me to try to locate high resolution GIS
data for the Banda Aceh area of Indonesia. This region was damaged in
the 2004 tsunami and there was data available at
http://www.acehniascatalog.info around  that time. They need data at a
higher resolution than 1:250,000 (which we have)  --  elevation,
shoreline, roads, culture, imagery, and administrative borders that were
created to assist and direct the recovery work. According to the article
about the ESRI reward to the Spatial Information and Mapping Centre (at
http://bit.ly/ESRI_award )  these data were once available.

Would you please read the students’ letter below, and let us know if you
are aware of the existence of any of these data now?  I have found
nothing that fits their need. Their budget is very limited so purchasing
data is not possible at this time. (But if data are available for
purchase, that would be information of interest.)

Letter from students with more detail:

I am a part of a group of graduating geological engineering students
from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. The goal of our capstone
project is to create an inundation model and risk mitigation plan for
the northern region of Sumatra, Indonesia (especially Banda Aceh) that
may be subject to increased seismicity and associated tsunamis in the
future.

I am emailing a request for information and data. Specifically, I am
looking for GIS data that is more detailed than 1:250’000 scale for the
Banda Aceh region in Indonesia, and any associated information. So far,
our requests and search for data has resulted in dead ends.

Here is what we have managed so far:

ESRI awarded the Spatial Information and Mapping Centre an award for
their work using GIS data in disaster recovery.

(http://www.acehniascatalog.info) as well as three people listed as main
points of contact (Mr.’s Ishadmay, Kidd, and Paul Harris) however, the
database is no longer online, and the email servers of the listed
addresses for the points of contact are no longer active.

Additionally, the Aceh Geospatial Data Centre
(http://gdc.acehprov.go.id/) is listed as a source of data for many
papers, and in statements from the government of Indonesia. The main
page of the website still functions, but none of the links to databases
or the information handling system itself are active. We know that
GeoSamba provided the online utility that displayed the data when it was
hosted.

Finally, we are in contact with the Indonesian Embassy in Canada, and
are inquiring about the status of the databases mentioned, and asking if
the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) has moved the
datasets or has them stored. According to several papers and government
statements smaller mapping centers were reporting to this central agency.

I am hoping that you have existing digitized maps of the northern region
of Sumatra from the past 30 years, any vector or GIS compatible dataset
of the region or any knowledge of the location and status of the
aforementioned data sets.

Additionally, we are looking for any remote sensing imagery from both
prior to and after the disaster occurred. If possible, we are looking
for data like the QuickBird images shown in the following publication.

With a more accurate data set, my group will be able to create an
improved model to contribute to the Indonesian efforts. Kind regards,
