Rather than respond precipitately on Wednesday (I had begun a draft),
and having this (Friday) evening returned to London from Amsterdam with
some 'proof positive' of the value of offering unwanted/duplicate Falk
city plans, may I - specifically on behalf of the author of the
'hot-off-the-press' 2-volume work below - request that any surplus Falk
plans of Amsterdam be offered to the Amsterdam Municipal Archives?

The first edition (and its quickly-followed reprint) of the
carto-bibliography 'Kaarten van Amsterdam 1866-2000', by Marc Hameleers
(Bussum : THOTH ; Amsterdam : Gemeentearchief Amsterdam, 2002 ; ISBN
90-6868-317-9) places 'Falk-Plan Amsterdam' as entry no. 162 on
pp.261-8, and lists and describes with location(s) of exemplars the
"1ste uitgave, [1949]" to the "57ste uitgave, [december 2000]"
respectively. In the new 'Kaarten van Amsterdam, deel II: 1866-2012' the
Falk entry is now no. 398 on pp.290-8 and extends to "[64ste uitgave,
[oktober 2010]". This plan is on the hyperbolic projection with scales
varying from 1:14 000 - 1:22 000.

In the 2002 edition "Geen exemplaar bekend" [= No exemplar known] is the
comment for 1st, 15th (april-oktober 1963), 17th (december 1963-augustus
1964), 27th ([1969-1970]), 29th ([1971]), 38th ([november 1976-september
1978]), 48th ([1989]), and 54th ([1996-1997]) 'editions'. The 2013 (new)
edition of this volume still has no location(s) noted for the 1st
'edition'. On a more positive and progressive note since 2002 the 15th
'edition' is now re-dated to "[juli 1963]" and has a private collection
location only, the 17th is re-dated to "[mei 1964]" with 2 locations,
the 27th re-dated to "[februari 1970]" also with 2 locations, the 29th
more accurately dated to "[juli 1971]" and with one private location,
the 38th re-dated to "[juli 1978]" (2 locations), the 48th of "[augustus
1989]" in one private collection, and the 54th 'edition' now re-dated to
"[mei 1997]" notes only one private collection. Apart from the author's
own institution, the objective has generally been to act as!
a union catalogue for the city plans in Dutch collections, and
originates in a through revision and enlargement of 'Catalogus van
Amsterdamsche plattegronden' by A.E. d'Ailly (Amsterdam, 1934).

'Kaarten van Amsterdam, deel I: 1538-1865' by Marc Hameleers [et al.]

van grachten, gebeurtenissen, etc.' [from 1565 to 1877]: pp.408-10. -

'Lijst met de datering van gebouwen, de aanleg van begraafplaatsen,
wegen en parken, het graven of de demping van grachten, etc.' [from 1850
to 2013]: pp.379-80. - ISBN 978-90-6868-621-0

For the url of the new/complete 2-volume carto-bibliography of Amsterdam
see:-

[then click for pp. 14-15 that have colour images of the different
dust-jackets and the usual ordering info]

PS: today was the opening day of the associated exhibition 'Booming
Amsterdam' (until 26 May 2013), for which see:
www.boomingamsterdam2013.nl [an unpaginated booklet, 'Booming Amsterdam
captions', is available in Dutch or English (the latter is of [53]
pages, 21 cm); no ISBN]

Partly sorry about this long and boring (to some) posting, which I shall
be re-sending to a 'MapHist' list or two tomorrow,

Hi Mary,

We have about 30 of these maps and have no plan to get rid of them. I'm
not sure I'd actively collect them. Seems like someone should. They
are interesting in their construction although difficult to scan!

Best,
Julie

Colleagues, I’m going through the back room here and am interested in
weeding a large number of older, folded(mostly Falk, mostly European
city) maps. Before I have my student list them all out for a dup-list,
I wondered---is anyone keeping these? Some go back to the 50s and 60s,
but we don’t have a user audience for them here and we definitely do not
have the room to keep an “historic” collection of folded maps.

Let me know on or off list if your institution, or an institution you
know of, is collecting these.

Thank you.
