The Federal Geographic Data Committee's publication,
"Manual of Federal Geographic Data Products," is a
compilation of Federally produced maps and related spatial data.
It was produced for the EPA to "provide a means of satisfying
the EPA's internal need for a comprehensive, standardized
description of Federal geographic data products."

It is available through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS):

        Federal Geographical Data Committee Secretariat

        590 National Center
        Reston, VA 22092
        (703) 648-4533 fax: (703) 648-5755

The publication is not specific to GIS, but it is very interesting.
