Introducing geomatics in map libraries means for map librarians to manage and
offer a type of electronic information service... which requires competencies
(to acquire or consolidate).
I recommend the reading of a very well-thought and inspiring article:

Corbin, John.
"Competencies for electronic information services".
The Public-Acces Computer Systems Review, 4, no. 6 (1993): 5-22.

This electronic journal is distributed on Internet and there is no
subscription fee.

You can get the full text of this article by retrieving a file.
Send an email to: [log in to unmask] or LISTSERV@UHUPVM1
that says: GET CORBIN PRV4N6 F=MAIL

Recover the file with your word processor and send it to you laser printer
(Garamond regular font 12 will make it look very pretty!).

"In conclusion, anyone who expects to manage, use, or provide services from an
electronic information service effectively must have a number of competencies,
including some personal characteristics, some specialized basic skills,
general knowledge that provides a base for the services, and some very
specialized knowledge directly related to services that are offered.[...]"
                                                Conclusion

The article expands on all these competencies in a simple, straightforward
manner.

A revised and rejuvenated professional paradigm emerging for map librarians?
