I am very remiss in my duties as Program Planner for this year's Special
Libraries Association Annual Conference, and for that I apologize. I have
not done well in keeping all of you informed as the programs were put
together these past 3-4 months, of course, having a second son born in
February had a little something to do with that! So, to make up for lost
time I am putting out an outline of the Final Program today and then will
follow up every couple of days with specifics about the tours I've arranged,
speakers and their topics of presentation, various reminders, and the like.
Also, I would like to extend an open invitation to all of you folks out there
who are not members of the Special Libraries Association but might be
interested in coming for all or part of the Conference. This year the Annual
Conference is being held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA from June 11-16th. All of
the Divisions and Caucuses within SLA have worked hard to pull together a
wide variety of programs, presentations, tours, open houses, workshops, and
Continuing Education courses! If anyone would like a copy of the Preliminary
Program to see all of the variety of topics to be explored please feel free
to contact me and I will have one sent your way.
Not to scare anyone off, but to give the hard facts, registration fees are
as follows (ticketed events are extra):
SLA Member for Entire Conference: $190.00
SLA Member One Day: $110.00
Nonmember for Entire Conference: $290.00
Nonmember for One Day: $140.00
Student/Retired: $85.00
The Conference co-Headquarter Hotels are the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the
Atlanta Hilton Towers. Three other close-by hotels are also available as
Conference Hotels, the difference being that the co-headquarters hotels will
house the exhibitors.
Okay, on with the Geography and Map Division's Program for the Atlanta
Conference! I will give room locations as well as time, day, and event, but
with the warning that the room locations are still subject to change at this
date (this according to the Conference Manager). I believe I have put together
an exciting, informative, up-to-date, and fun schedule of events for all of
us, and attempted to keep the pace down a bit this year. You will recognize
that some of the meetings are still scheduled for the same days/times that
all of you veteran conference-goers are familiar with.

10:30 to 12:00: Committee Chairs Meeting (this is not a formally recognized
meeting, but I set it up by request so that Committee Chairs
and members could gather to finalize any reports, presenta-
tions, requests, or other business to go before the
Executive Board later in the day. It is up to each Committee
Chair to contact your members and arrange for a place to
meet, either before the conference or on that day)
4:30 to 7:00 p.m.: Division Board Meeting (Marriott, Mackenzie Room)
8:00 to 12:00 p.m.: Divison Open House (Hilton, Henry Room)

Monday, June 13, 1994
9:00 to 11:45 a.m.: Annual Business Meeting and Reports Session (Marriott,
Trinidad Room) **PLEASE NOTE** Final Nominations and
Elections for Officers will be held promptly at
11:00 a.m.!!
Noon to 1:00 p.m.: Lunch/Exhibit Hall Visit Time
1:30 to 4:00 p.m.: Tour to ERDAS, Inc., satellite software imaging producers
and also producers of other satellite image products for
research, commercial, and non-commercial uses. Transpor-
tation arrangements to be announced early next week.
6:00 to 9:00 p.m.: Dinner Foray to Dailey's Restaurant. Located just 1 1/2
blocks from the Marriott Marquis, American cuisine,
moderately priced. I have reservations for 20 but can
take more as long as I have confirmed numbers at least
7 days in advance. Please notify me directly if you
intend to join us for dinner. Open to Division and
non-Division members alike

Tuesday, June 14, 1994
7:30 to 9:30 a.m.: A.M.!! Wow, this is really early! Yep, but this is
a breakfast, slide presentation, and meeting update all
in one! Please note that this is a change in time from
that posted in the Preliminary Program, where it was
originally scheduled for 7:30 to 8:45 a.m.
"Procuring Maps from the Former Soviet Union", a slide
presentation by Russell Guy of Omni Resources; breakfast
at $18.00 per person; and a review/update of the "Map
Libraries in Transition" that was held in Washington, D.C
this past October. (Hilton, Gwinnett Room)
9:30 to 10:15 a.m.: Exhibit Hall Visit/Break Time
10:30 to 11:45 a.m.: Contributed Papers Session I (Hilton; Paulding, Dekalb
Rooms)
**PLEASE NOTE** This was originally scheduled for
1:30 to 2:45 p.m. in the Preliminary Program
"D-Day Maps as Found in Government Documents and Other
Non-Traditional Sources" by Mr. Daniel K. Blewett
"Simple Tourist, Or, Distinguished Explorers? The
Dilemma of Women Travelers in Victorian Times" by
Dr. Sanford H. Bederman
Noon to 2:45 p.m.: Lunch and Visit to Underground Atlanta. We will be eating
lunch at Mick's, kind of a gourmet hamburger restaurant,
but with a wide variety of lunch menu offerings in a fun
atmosphere. I have reservations for 15, can take more if
interested. There are plenty of shops, vendors, a food
court, a couple of art galleries and a museum, etc. for
the sightseer. I wouldn't be surprised if some of you
returned later in the week to do more browsing/shopping!
We will travel via MARTA train both ways, a five-minute
ride each way. MARTA costs $1.25 per ride. The station
is 2 blocks from the Marriott Marquis, where we will
gather in the main lobby and go as a group.
3:00 to 5:30 p.m.: Contributed Papers Session II (Hilton, Paulding and
and Strategy Sharing Session Dekalb Rooms)
Following the presentation will be a Division Strategy-
sharing session of approximately 45 minutes

Thursday, June 16, 1994 TOUR DAY!!
We will depart the Marriott Marquis at 8:30 a.m. to bus down to Jarrell
Plantation, Historic Macon, lunch at Beall's 1860, tours of two historic
antebellum homes, the Hay House and the Cannonball House, a possible visit
to the Washington Memorial Library (Macon) Geneological Resource Room that
is austensibly to see the map collection there, and the Ocmulgee Mounds
National Monument. We will be on our own at Jarrell Plantation and at the
restaurant but will have a tour guide for the afternoon stops mentioned above.
We should return to the Marriott by approx. 5:30 p.m. If anyone would be
interested in organizing a "post-conference dinner" for that evening please
let me know and I'll suggest possible restaurants nearby.
That's it for now folks, and I hope this gives you all a sense of what to
expect in terms of programming. Bring comfortable warm-weather clothes as
it will be in the mid to upper 80's (it has been consistently 5 degrees above
normal temps. this spring so looks like a hot summer is on its way) and very
humid. Atlanta is a very friendly city and the downtown core is quite
walkable. I look forward to serving as your guide for that week!!
