To those of you who will be joining us for a trip to historic Macon, Georgia on
Thursday, June 16th at the SLA Annual Conference, or, to those of you who plan
on attending the Conference in Atlanta but were not certain whether to shell
out the price of $30.00 for the all-day Macon trip, the following itinerary
should prove useful and helpful, if not downright exciting!

I had the pleasure of spending this past Wednesday in Macon, and was able to
take the 2-hour guided tour mentioned below--absolutely fantastic! I will also
tell you all in advance that there is some departure from the original plans as
published in the Preliminary Program, originally we were to visit Jarrell
Plantation, about 30 minutes northwest of Macon, to see an outdoor "living
museum", but that has been dropped from this final agenda. Instead, we will
be visiting a small historic map collection at the Washington Memorial Library
and I have added an additional 1/2 hour to our lunch time so that we don't
feel rushed in our repast. I will warn you in advance, Macon, the "city of
white columns" and "Cherry blossom capital of the world" lives up to its
reputations! It has a large and very active historic district, more white-
columned homes and buildings than you can imagine, and a wide variety of
antebellum and Victorian homes! This promises to be a very fun, very inter-
esting, and very enjoyable day, so please join us if you can. Itinerary
follows:

8:00-8:15 a.m. Gather in lobby of Marriott Marquis Hotel to board bus
8:30 a.m. Depart Marriott for Macon
8:30-10:00 a.m. Travel to Macon, arriving at Terminal Station & Downtown
                      Visitor's Center

10:00-12:00 a.m. Pick up tour guide, take tour of Historic Macon with the
                      following stops:
Sidney Lanier Cottage, birthplace of Sidney Lanier
Cannonball House (you'll learn why it was named this
                                           during the tour)
Hay House (you want to see opulence at its best in the
                                    19th century? This is it!)
and a whole host of other sites as we drive through the
                      historic district

12:00-1:30 p.m. Lunch at Beall's 1860 Restaurant, a converted Greek
Revival Style mansion (the cost of the lunch was built
into the ticket price for this
                                             all-day event, however, if you
plan on cocktails or dessert that
                                             will be extra)

1:30-1:45 p.m. Board bus and take 4-block drive to Washington Memorial
                      Library

1:45-2:15 p.m. Visit and tour of historic map collection at Library

2:15-2:45 p.m. Board bus and drive to Ocmulgee National Monument

3:00-3:45 p.m. Visit Ocmulgee National Monument, site of 10,000 years of
                      human habitation (from pre-9000 B.C. to A.D. 1715), that
includes several large mounds used for burial, as lodge's
for temples or meetings or possibly short-term homes, or
as ceremonial platforms. Other than the Visitors Center
this will be an outdoor event, including some walking,
so be sure to pack a hat and/or sunblock lotion

3:45-4:00 p.m. Board bus for return trip to Atlanta

4:00-5:30 p.m. (hopefully) Return trip to Atlanta and Marriott Marquis. Of
course, since we will be driving into town during
afternoon rush hour it may take us until around
                            6:00 p.m. until arrival

Yes, this is a very busy agenda, but I hope I have spread it out enough so as
not to make anyone too exhausted. At any rate, there will be lots of resting
time on the way back to Atlanta! I am also putting together an information
packet which will include several brochures of the homes and sites we will be
visiting, visitors guide to Macon, a National Park Service guide to Ocmulgee
National Monument that includes a site map inside, and lots of interesting
information on the various Indian cultures of the area; to be given to all
who go on the tour. Please wear comfortable warm-weather (i.e. hot and humid
weather) clothing as we will be in and out of the bus a few times. We certainly
don't want any cases of heat stress or worse, heat stroke!

I look forward to accompanying you all on this trip, I certainly had a very
enjoyable experience in Macon just a couple of days ago!
