Please excuse the MAPS-L/LIS-MAPS cross-posting.
 
We have been presented with an extract from an anonymous work of 1838 entitled
"A portrait of geology". The following passage appears on p177:
        "In the year 1538, within the space of thirty-six hours,
        Monte Nouvo was formed in the Bay of Baie [the "a" has an
        umlaut]. The height of the mountain is 420 feet"....
Does anybody know where this is? This part of the book has global coverage, so
although the Mediterranean is favourite, it is by no means certain. We have
checked numerous gazetteers, and a world guide to volcanoes, which refers to a
Monte Nouvo erupting in 1538, locating it as the cone of Campi Flegrei in Italy
(40' 51"N, 14' 08"E). However this appears to be too far inland to be an exact
match.
Any ideas?
