                        Announcement of Position
 
Fort Lewis College is seeking a Reference Librarian to provide general
reference service and to act as a vital and creative part of the library
reference team, to participate in bibliographic instruction and reference
collection development.  The reference environment emphasizes electronic
reference and instructional services.  This librarian will also serve
as a liaison to the science departments.  Planned starting date is on
or before September 1.
 
Required Qualifications: MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited institution;
Broad-based reference skills, including experience with CD-ROM database
technology. BS degree, or higher, in a natural science discipline.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a collegial
team; flexibility in adapting to change.  Excellent oral and written
communication skills.
 
Desired Additional Qualifications:  Experience with map and documents
collections; online searching in Dialog and other online services.
 
Salary and Benefits:  This is an entry level, tenure track position and
reports to the Coordinator of Reference Services.  Twelve-month contract.
Minimum $26,000 depending on qualifications, benefits included.
 
Library Information:  The library currently holds 180,000 volumes and
has 1,000 periodical subscriptions.  Library staff includes 7 faculty
and 9 classified staff members.  Computer automation presently includes:
OCLC, MARMOT online library system (MARMOT is a library consortium
providing automated resource sharing, using CARL software), FirstSearch,
DIALOG, and 12 CD-ROM databases.  The campus has access to the Internet
and Colorado SuperNet.
 
Geographic Area:  Fort Lewis College is a state-supported undergraduate
liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 4,200 students.  Durango
is a culturally diverse town of 13,000 people located at 6500 feet in
the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado with an additional 23,000
people living in the surrounding county.  The area has many opportunities
for skiing, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor recreation.  In addition,
the campus and community provide access to fine musical and theatrical
presentations.
