The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has updated its Wide
Area Information Server (WAIS).

Items on the server as of May 1994 include:

1. A Catalog of Automated Information Systems (CAIS) of the
FWS. This catalog of metadata (descriptive information)
lists both active and proposed information systems. Contact
points are included for each system.

The CAIS currently describes 87 information systems. A new
version of the CAIS will be available by the end of June.
This version will serve updated metadata on 120 systems.

2. A description of the various servers (WAIS, World Wide Web,
Gopher, File Transfer Protocol, etc.) maintained by the FWS.

3. State codes, County codes, and USGS Hydrologic Units, as
defined in FIPS publications 5-2, 6-4 and 103.

4. The latest copy of the "Content Standards for Digital
Spatial Metadata" produced by the Federal Geographic Data
     Committee.

5. The President's Executive Order implementing the National
     Spatial Data Infrastructure.

6. A list of State fish and wildlife agency contacts for fish
and wildlife information systems produced by the Fish and
     Wildlife Information Exchange.

7. The WinWAIS client software produced by the U.S. Geological
     Survey for accessing WAIS servers.

8. The MOSAIC client software for accessing World Wide Web
     servers.

The easiest way to access

USFWS_Region_9_Info_Res_Mgt_Data_Admin

is to use WAIS client software to connect to the Directory of
Servers, search for "wildlife" (without the quotes), and save the
description of our server. You can also key the following
address information directly into your WAIS client software.

server: USFWS_Region_9_Info_Res_Mgt_Data_Admin
port: 1028
address: 164.159.126.3
database: /data/wais/spxwais/irmindex/irmserv

This is just one of many approaches the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service will use to share its data.
