        I am relatively new to my job as Library Assistant I at
Sterling C. Evans Library located at Texas A&M University.  I
perform adaptive cataloging of maps.  I was excited to hear about
Maps-L from my supervisor (who catalogs special formats including
maps) and have monitored the discussions over the last several
months.  I noticed this listserv is often used to ask questions
about specific maps, but I wanted to ask a general cataloging
question.
 
For map sections, how is horizontal and vertical scale recorded
in the 255 field(s) in map records at other libraries?
 
"Cartographic Methods: A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2"
(c1982) provides the following scale example under section 3B8:
 
Scale 1:250 000. Vertical scale 1:125 000. Vertical exaggeration
2:1
 
 
However, I have also seen this information recorded as:
 
Scale [ca. 1:250,000 - horizontal]. Scale [ca. 1:23,000 -
vertical]
 
1. If the map actually has 2 different scales (horizontal &
vertical) on it in a verbal statement, I assume I follow the
first example and leave out the word "Horizontal" to fit the
prescribed pattern.  Can the 2nd example (assuming the
information is not on the piece in a verbal statement) also be
entered as:
 
Scale [ca. 1:250,000. Vertical scale ca. 1:23,000]
 
I read in AACR2r 3.3B2. that you can provide additional scale
information found on the item, and 3.3B3. states that "If the
scale within one item varies and the outside values are known,
give both scales connected by a hyphen."  Does this apply to
scales for map sections?
 
2. Is horizontal and vertical scale always recorded in one 255
field rather than two fields?  (The "Map Cataloging Manual,"
c1991, p.2.4 states that you should give each scale in a separate
scale statement for a single item with component parts at two
scales.  Does this apply to map sections?
 
Sorry if I have inundated y'all with too much information.  I am
new to maps and hope this isn't a "dumb" question.  I appreciate
your insights.
