NOTE regarding the release of "Cartographic and Digital Standard for Geologic
Map Information," U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-525

The U.S. Geological Survey has released the report "Cartographic and Digital
Standard for Geologic Map Information," as U.S. Geological Survey Open-File
Report 95-525. The report establishes the standard for information presented
on geologic maps and derivative earth science maps. The standard contains
3 parts: Part 1 presents the standard for the content of geologic maps,
accuracy of position of geologic data, representation of data, and reference
to original and derivative data. Part 2 establishes the standard for graphic
and digital representation of geologic map data, including symbols, their
cartographic specifications, and digital coding. Nearly 900 symbols are
provided, and the text provides guidance for the definition of symbols not
shown in the standard. Part 3 describes the standard for color and pattern
selection and for graphic representation of rock types. Colored symbols,
colors, and patterns are accurately provided in the report. The Standard
results from work by the U.S. Geological Survey with cooperation from the
Association of American State Geologists and the Federal Geographic Data
Committee, Geological Data Subcommittee. As presented, the Standard is a
draft standard, intended for use, review, and comment for two years by earth
scientists across the Nation. At the end of that time, recommendations for
changes and additions will be considered for possible inclusion in the final
standard.
