I presume that lat/lon to mapping grid conversion is the request.

In terms of algorithms, the question is do you want mathematical
definitions, computer language source code or a program that will
perform the transformations?

For description of many projections, the best source is:

"Map Projections---A Working Manual" by John P. Snyder
        USGS Prof. paper 1395

For C source code for over 100 projections as well as application
programs:

        ftp charon.er.usgs.gov (128.128.40.24) in directory pub/PROJ.4
        check README for details.
