                            ZURICH - 26-30 SEPTEMBER 1994

MAPCURATORSHIP IN TRANSITION: COMPUTERIZED FORMS OF MAPS,
A NEW ENVIRONMENT

Dear Colleagues,

We take great pleasure in inviting you to the 9th Conference of LIBER's map
curators,
to be held in Zurich in September of this year.

Besides the official LIBER meeting and national reports, the conference will
deal with
a new field of interest in our profession: maps on computer. The topic of the
conference
is: 'Map curatorship in transition: Computerized forms of maps, a new
environment'.
Should we collect digital maps in our map libraries, and, if so, which ones? How
do we
go about buying them? How do we replace data with updated editions? And what
about
copyright? How should we organize points of access for the computer user? What
hardware
and software do we need? How should we catalogue digital maps? There are many
such
questions to be answered. On the following pages of this invitation, you will
find the
conference programme as well as further information about the main topic. A
detailed
list of the papers and demonstrations to be given is being drawn up by the Board
of the
Groupe des Cartothecaires. In case you do not have the chance to give a paper,
or in
case you would like to give a graphic demonstration of your area of interest,
there
will be a poster exhibition in the foyer of the conference hall.
The special arrangements include visits to three map exhibitions and two map
departments,
a dinner (funded by the organizing libraries) and an excursion into the Swiss
Alps. A
public transport ticket will give you unlimited travel in Zurich during the five
days of
the conference. Accompanying persons are allowed to take part in the
extra-conference
activities (their fees for dinner, the excursion and the public transport ticket
can be
paid on the opening day).

Please find enclosed the registration form, which you should send to the
following
address by 15 June 1994 at the latest:

to the
Sept. 30 Landesbibliothek Glarus and the Blumer Map Collection

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------

For Monday afternoon, a visit is planned to the map exhibition entitled 'From
Dufour's
map to the digital map', organized by the Swiss Federal Bureau of Topography. On
Tuesday
there will be a visit both to the exhibition on the cartographer Eduard Imhof
(organized
by Mrs. V. Imhof) and to the map department of the library of the ETH. On
Thursday
evening, there will be a reception at the opening of the exhibition 'Old maps of
Eastern
Switzerland', organized jointly by A. Durst and the Zentralbibliothek Zurich and
held in
the historic setting of the Swiss National Museum. The excursion into Canton
Glarus, to
the new, unusual buildings that house its State Library and to the Blumer Map
Collection
will give us an opportunity to experience the nature and culture of a Swiss
Alpine canton.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------
The main topic 'Digital maps in map collections' will be treated to
two-and-a-half days
of lectures, demonstrations and group discussions at the conference. It is a
many
facetted topic that raises questions about many different matters:

- Use of data banks of digital maps by map curators and external users

- Digital maps that are suited for use by the public

- Variety of forms of digital maps: Floppy disks for PCs, CD-ROM, multimedia
systems,
Geographical Information Systems, distributed databases, network databases

- Copy possibilities and the copyright situation

- Procuring of digital maps, questions of bibliographies, costs, possibilities
of
  coopertaion with library networks

- Replacement of data bases by new updated editions

- Storage and archiving of digital maps

- Conservation of cartographical databases, hardcopies for longtime conservation

- Documentary aspects of digital cartographic materials (ISBD(CM) + ISBD(CF))

- Information and documentary to make users aware of map databases

- The rule of map curators: From primary information brokers to secondary
information
  brokers?

- Digital maps and cooperation in online library systems

- Knowledge upgrading for map curators, concerning digital maps

PAPERS AND POSTER EXHIBITIONS

There are probably few members of our working group who already have experience
in the
field of digital maps. It is therefore of importance that these same specialists
should
both give papers themselves, and seek experts outside the working group who
could also
give papers. Should you yourself have such experience, then we would be grateful
for
any suggestions. Applications give a paper should be sent to the Swiss
Organizing
Committee along with the registration form. Please also mention on this form
whether
you wish to take part in the poster exhibition, or whether you know a special
topic for
the demonstration stands at the conference.

TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT FOR DEMONSTRATIONS

For lectures and demonstrations, a beamer and a LCD projector will be available
in the
conference hall, and it will also be possible to connect up with external
networks. We
intend installing a PC (IBM 486) in each of the four discussion rooms. Should
participants require further equipment, they are requested to contact the
organizing
commmittee as soon as possible.
Outside the conference hall there is enough exhibition space for a session on
posters
to take place. There is also room for five or six stands to demonstrate digital
maps.

DISCUSSIONS

In cooperation with the organizing committee, the Board of the GdC has decided
to give
an opportunity for further discussion of the conference topic in smaller groups,
after
the lectures and demonstrations have taken place. There will be two
English-speaking
groups, one French group and one German group. Each will be lead by a chairman.
We
await the result of these discussions with great anticipation.
