U.S. Map Buddies,

there is a regularly produced, depository map in the Census
GE-60 series in jeopardy because it's derived from the data
mentioned below. This may be good time to pen a note. LC

LETTERS NEEDED - TO SAVE CPS MIGRATION QUESTION

Kristin Hansen of the Census Bureau's Population Division has indicated
that the CPS migration question on "residence 5 years ago" (to measure
1990-95 migration across states, metro areas, etc) will not be included
on the 1995 CPS unless letters of support are faxed to her next week.

This question provides the only means to estimate geographic movement
over the 1990-95 priod, that is comparable to census-based measures for
the 1985-90 period. It is also the only nationally-representative
mid-decade migration item that can be used to measure stream selectivity
by race, education, occupaton, etc using the CPS Public Use Tape.

Please take a few minutes out to fax a short letter or memo to Kris
Hansen, indicating the importance or your likely use of this migration
question.
