We are pleased to announce the release of a new version of the Ulysses
cross-tabulation engine, a unique Internet-based service designed to
provide rapid, interactive access to socioeconomic data on individuals and
households for the U.S.A. and China.  This release contains a one
percent sample of microdata for 1970-1990 for the United States and
1982 for China.  Ulysses allows you to choose records from national census
data, and compute statistical information from the selected records.
Ulysses can deliver tabulated results from gigabyte-sized datasets in
seconds.

--- Data
The new version of Ulysses accesses the United States census 1% Public
Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) from 1970, 1980 and 1990.  The PUMS files
contain more than 100 data items about households and more than 100
data items about persons. The 1990 1% PUMS contains more than one
million household records and more than 2.5 million person records.
Ulysses also accesses data from the 1982 China census which contains 25
data items and more than ten million person records.

Ulysses generates frequencies, means, summary percentages and standard
deviations.  Distinguishing features of Ulysses include:
*       the ability to switch data sets during a session;
*       simultaneous use of the same data set by many users;
*       a simple user interface designed to be usable without manuals;
*       access to online help;
*       interactive keyword searching of data dictionaries;
*       recoding of variables;
*       selection of records using complex AND-OR criteria; and
*       saving and automatic retrieval of output.

CIESIN/SEDAC also provide data extraction services that can be applied
to the 1% or 5% U.S. PUMS files from 1980 or 1990 or March Current
Population Survey (CPS) data from 1968-1992.  If you are interested in
