The J.B. Harley Research Fellowships in the
                    History of Cartography
                        London, U.K.

                     in association with

                     The British Library
                   National Maritime Museum
                     Public Record Office
                  Royal Geographical Society
          -------------------------------------------

Applications for the 1997 Fellowships are invited from anyone
pursuing advanced research in the history of cartography,
irrespective of nationality, discipline or profession. 'Advanced
research' is taken to mean work towards a doctorate,
post-doctoral research, and work of an equivalent level
regardless of the applicant's formal qualifications. Preference
will be given to interpretative studies in map history,
irrespective of area, theme or period.

The Harley Fellowships are prestigious as the only ones of their
kind in Europe. They aim to promote use of the great wealth of
cartographic material in London. Awards are normally of 400
pounds, to assist with the cost of two weeks in London.

Seven Fellowships have been awarded in the past two years, to a
museum curator, a social scientist and doctoral students and
academics from departments of English, Fine Arts and History.
Winners to date have come from Belgium, Canada, New Zealand, UK
and USA.

The closing date for applications is NOVEMBER 1st. Please
request further details from Tony Campbell, Hon. Sec., J.B.
Harley Fellowships, at the address below. The text of the
application leaflet can be sent by e-mail.

Institutions are invited to request copies of the printed
leaflet for display purposes.
