This question is for those librarians using GPO cataloging copy for their
US Geological Survey depository maps.

The University of Florida subscribes to the OCLC GPO Cataloging tapes. These
records are loaded directly into our OPAC. The map cataloger adds the
Lib. Cong Classification number and makes necessary revisions. With a
special code we are able to determine which of records are direct tape
tape loads and which records already have been modified.

While reviewing the Antarctica unmodified load records, I discovered what
appears to be an error that has occurred on a consistent basis for all of
the records of the 1:50,000-series(topographic). The only subject heading
listed for each map is "Photo Maps". The maps have no remote sensing base
to them. They are shaded topographic maps which have been compiled from
photographs similar to many topographic quadrangles for US states. My
cataloging experience tells me that the subject heading should be
"Antarctica Maps, Topographic". I am not objecting to the use of "Photo
Maps" instead of "Remote Sensing Maps" as these were cataloged before the
official change in subject headings for these materials.

Has this topic already been discussed on the List or at a meeting? There
have been a series of messages I missed because of a change in computers.
Before I persue this any further, I would like to be positive that it has
not been addressed. There are not a large group of these published yet but
just enought to show a pattern which needs to be dealt with now. A double
check showed that these records had not been changed in the OCLC database.

An example of this is OCLC #30529862; Beacon Valley, Antarctica. Produced
by U.S.G.S. and the New Zealand Department of Survey and Land Information...
in 1993. The SuDocs # is I19.100:77199Y 1-TM-050/993.; Item #0619-G-19.

If this matter has already been resolved or I am in error, I would appreciate
learning what the resolution of the problem was. Otherwise my first step in
trying to get the records corrected will be to contact OCLC.

Thank you
