Subject: USGS thematic map confusion

I am confused about the numbering of a couple of USGS I-series maps.

In August of 1997, we received I-2588--"Sidescan sonar image, surficial
geologic interpretation, and bathymetry of the Long Island Sound sea floor
off Haammonasset Beach State Park Connecticut."
I numbering seems correct because I-2589 is a similar map.

But this July we received "Geologic map of the western Ophir Planum region
(MTM-10067) of Mars." The envelope was numbered "I-2588." However,
someone at USGS (?) had written, in pen, an "M" after the number. The
number makes no sense when contrasting it with the previous "I-2588."

I find no other "Ophir Planum" maps in the I-series.

Is the number "I-2588-M" incorrect? If so, what should the correct number
be?

Thanks in advance.
