CALL FOR ABSTRACTS & PAPERS

THE 4TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GLOBAL SPATIAL DATA INFRASTRUCTURE
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

March 13-15, 2000

The GSDI Steering Committee invites the submission of 200- to 400-word
Abstracts for presentations to be held at the 4th International GSDI
Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, March 13-15, 2000. The authors of
successful submissions will be asked to submit.

The concept of Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) encompasses the
broad policy, organisational, technical and financial arrangements
necessary to support trans-national or global access to geographic
information. GSDI is seen by many as central to the response to the
challenge of global sustainable development. Speakers at previous GSDI
conferences in Bonn, Germany; Chapel Hill, USA; and Canberra, Australia
have opened a discussion and exploration of the components of GSDI, and the
technological and institutional challenges to -- and strategies towards --
its implementation.

The GSDI 4 Conference will include a combination of both invited
international speakers and presentations selected from responses to an
international Call for Papers. We invite submissions from representatives
from government, industry and academia involved in the planning,
development, management, application and evaluation of regional, national
or trans-national spatial data infrastructures.

SUGGESTED TOPICS

In the interests of fostering lively debate, we encourage presentations and
papers which:

(a) critically examine proposed examples of "SDI best practices" in terms
of planning, policies, applications and standards-based technology
solutions;

(b) illuminate debates underway in different countries or regions regarding
alternative strategies, pitfalls and "cross-cultural" issues in existing
SDI implementations;

(c) explain new technologies, programs and research initiatives which may
provide new directions or guidance in SDI implementation;

and especially...

(d) highlight the unique successes and challenges to be found in data
harmonization efforts, enabling policies, important case studies and
related initiatives in emerging nations.
