Sender: Mary McInroy <[log in to unmask]>

MAGERT's fourth and final program will be held Monday, June 18 from 2-4 PM
at the Moscone Convention Center, Room 220
An updated description of the program follows:

"Building Internet Map Libraries by Digitizing Historical Maps"

This program will describe two digitization projects.
The first project involves the creation of an online collection of early
Washington State maps. The presenters will demonstrate and describe the
Early Washington Maps online collection, a collaborative project of the
University of Washington Libraries and the Washington State University
Libraries, funded by the Washington State Library's Digital Imaging
Initiative. This project uses the CONTENTdm software suite to build and
distribute the online collection and MrSID imaging products (encoding
software and MrSID Image Server) to make high resolution maps available to
searchers. Presenters are: Trevor Bond, Special Collections Librarian,
Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collections, Washington State University
Libraries; Alan Cornish, Systems Librarian, Washington State University
Libraries; and Rosemary Streatfeild, Science Librarian & Map Coordinator,
Owen Science and Engineering Library, Washington State University Libraries.

The second project involves the creation of an online collection of more
than 4,400 historic maps. Topics will include methods used in high
resolution scanning, metadata creation, choice of viewing software and
image compression formats, archiving, strategies for sharing images and
data, and how map libraries can plan and develop their own online
collections. Presenter is David Rumsey, President, Cartography
Associates. Fro more information on the David Rumsey Collection, click on

Hope to see you there. Check out the rest of MAGERT's San Francisco
schedule at http://www.sunysb.edu/libmap/magprogs.htm, including time/place
listings for MAGERT committee meetings and discussion groups--something for
(most) everyone.
