Subject: USGS and GPO: nitty-gritty questions
Sender: Mark Thomas <[log in to unmask]>

Let's suppose for a moment that the GPO depository program is
eliminated. Does anyone know what USGS's plans would be? Although
they ship paper maps from Denver, the item selection and management
is done by GPO, and this management would be gone. Would we return to
the old-timey days of having a separate depository system for USGS
maps, or would there simply be no more USGS maps on deposit?

Has USGS had a chance to think much about this at all? (I realize,
probably not, but I'd like to know if they have any contingency
plans.)

Of course, NIMA, Forest Service, CIA, etc. maps are shipped directly
from GPO, so those items would be affected even more directly. (Would
they want to institute their own depository programs again--even
agencies that never had?)
