Well, here at Evergreen we have open stacks for the maps and allow
patrons to check out maps for the entire quarter. Patrons are surprised
that we allow them to do that and they do get checked out. The main
drawback, of course, is loss of the map. I've had to look for
replacements via the Needs & Offers service available via the depository
system. At our college maps are a big ciruculated item.

Maps are meant to be taken out and be used. If you cannot take them
with you, what's the point? They cannot be photocopied because there
isn't a large enough copier to get the job done right. Most maps have
color in order to identify specific features, ideally it would be great
to have a color photocopier but most institutions are unable to afford
such an expense.

A GIS workstation is also a plus to have for your digital maps. If you
don't have one, GPO has created workstation reccomendations that can be
found at: http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/computers/index.html

Dear MAPS-L,

As a new map cataloger I have enjoyed the great information shared on
this
listserv. May I join in the discussion with the following questions:

1. What do you see as the benefits and drawbacks to users, staff, and
collection to having open (but supervised) vs. closed stacks for the general
(non rare) map collection?

2. Do you have any good map collection floor plans/layouts that you could
direct me to on the web or send directly to me as e-mail attachment?

Your help with the above questions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Tom
