Hello everyone:

In order to get people jazzed up about the programs MAGERT is sponsoring at
the ALA conference, thought I'd send out the descriptions and speakers.
Also note our welcome reception and field trip.  For information on our

and "regular" members and their guests)

Saturday June 16  9-12:30  Joint Program: Map Cataloging: Learning the
Basics (co-sponsored by ALCTS/MAGERT)
Description: Got maps? You have them and you want users to find them in your
catalog.
You have cataloging personnel who don't usually handle maps. What's the
solution?
Come to our map cataloging presentation. We will go over the basics of map
cataloging
for the experienced cataloger. Corporate authors? Which title? This workshop
covers the
similarities and differences between map cataloging and books cataloging.
Bring all your questions and the amazing map catalogers will answer all!

Saturday June 16th 2-4 pm  Earthquakes, Fires, and Floods: Using Maps to
Prepare for Disasters
Description: This program will present the use of maps and spatial data by
three government agencies involved with natural disasters, U.S. Geological
Survey, California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection, and the Federal
Emergency Management Agency. Each speaker will discuss how they use
Geographic Information Systems, spatial data and printed maps to avoid,
plan, and prepare for natural disasters. In addition, they will share how
librarians can obtain access to the maps and spatial data they use.

Sunday June 17th  2-5:30 pm  Census 2000:  Opportunities and Challenges
Description: This program will present the wealth and variety of information
available from the 2000 Census. Speakers include a representative from the
Census who will talk about what data and geography will be available,
representatives from two private companies that repackage TIGER files/census
data on what products they are developing, and a map librarian and a
government documents librarian will respond to the speakers and discuss what
services they are planning on providing to their users.

Monday June 18th  2-4 pm  Building Internet Map Libraries by Digitizing
Historical Maps
Description: This program will describe two projects. The first project
involves the creation of an online collection of early Washington State
maps. The second project involved the creation of an online collection of
more than 4400 historic maps. Topic will include methods used in high
resolution scanning, metadata creation, choice of viewing software and image
compression formats, archiving, strategies for sharing images and data, and
how map libraries can plan and develop their own online collections.
