How does the Lambert/Albers variation in state maps match up with the Lambert/UTM variation in state planes? While state plane zones are meant to be used for sections of a state, I've noticed that often state geodata is delivered uniformly for the entire state using a state plane projection from the central zone of a state. Was UTM used for state-wide mapping as well as Lambert and Albers? Or is that just about geodata?

Nowadays most maps of a single state are produced on the Lambert conformal conic projection. But many maps don't give a projection statement, especially from the time you are describing.

Lambert Conformal Conic has been used since about 1938 or 1940, especially for states with east-west expanse. If it is not that, it could be the Albers Equal Area Conic.
