You may know that you can obtain for free the modern 1:625,000
Geological Mapping for Great Britain from the British Geological Survey
website:
http://www.bgs.ac.uk/products/digitalmaps/digmapgb_625.html

Its available in ESRI and MapInfo formats, KMZ and WMS.

At this scale, Scotland and part of Northern England would print out and
look clear at A0 size.
