         directory: pub/avhrr/images
         Sea-Surface-Temperature data (near-real-time)

The data are AVHRR images within the radius of reception of
the
         university's HRPT station, approximately 5 S to 45 N and
125 W
to 165 E. The processed images are available usually
within 30
min. of noaa-11 and noaa-12 passages.

The data is in "CDF" format. CDF is a UCAR product,
available

They
have a guide there, NetCDF User's guide, that documents it.

The image files are compressed binary, and labeled after
the
names of the satellites (n11 or n12), and the times of the
         satellite passages (yyddd.hhmm).

      Directory: pub/snow
Map of snow cover for the US, derived from 12km reduction of
GOES
data. Also 1km resolution snow cover maps of California and
Nevada, Snow Water Equivalent and other images

The National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center is
now
distributing satellite snow data derived from AVHRR and GOES
for
major portions of the U.S., southern Canada and Alaska. North
America is split into 26 windows, each approx 1000x1000
pixels, at
      a resolution of 1.1 km/pixel.

There are a number of types of GIF images in this directory:
the
Satellite Snow Cover Maps, weekly national and regional
summaries
and a special blow-up of the Upper Colorado basin. The naming
convention for the daily product is:

      WWSYYJJJ.TTT, where
         WW is the window number
S is the satellite (snow maps: g for GOES or a,b,c for
             NOAA-A, -B, -C, w for Snow Water Equivalent, n for SWE
normalized, x for the latest snow cover map with added
             text)
         YY is the year (92)
JJJ is the Julian date, the date from January 1.
TTT is the type, GIF or SHF, where GIF is a binary graphic
image
and SHF stands for the SHEF message, the Standard
Hydrologic Exchange Format. It is the alphanumeric
results
of the satellite snow cover mapping by basin and by
             elevation zone.

A number of derived products are also distributed. Snow-Water
Equivalent, and Deviations of SWE from a normal value are
calculated, incorporating the SNOTEL values from the Soil
Conservation Service, for California and Nevada, and the
Western
      United States.

A summary of the week's snow cover is usYYJJJ.gif, with
comments
from the hydrologist in usYYJJJ.msg. A table showing which
scenes
have been mapped so far this year is in the file YYJJJ.tbl.
At
the end of the snow season, all the snow images, satellite
images
and ancillary data will be compiled into a CD-ROM. Snow data
for
1991 and 1990 are available for $200. See the file CDROM.TXT
in
      this directory for more information.

World Data Bank (data file of coastlines, countries, rivers,
etc.)
12 megabytes, compressed! This file is broken up into 5
pieces,
so you have to get them all separately and 'cat' them
together.
Note: if you are not a C programmer you may not be able to
use
this as it is a highly packed file, and the sample source code
is
      in C.

Note: Be aware that this site is going to be discontinued
soon.
However, Joe Dellinger says that the data on here will be
      migrated elsewhere. More news later...

                Name: WorldDataBank Disk: 580
Using a database of coordinates compiled by the CIA and
made available under the Freedom of Information Act, this
program plots world maps in cylindrical or spherical
projections, with various degrees of magnification.
This is version 2.2, an update to version 2.0 on disk
262, and now includes the largest available data file,
for detailed mapping of even small sections of the globe.
                Includes source.

"There are two types of photos avaialble:
          1024 x 1024 and 512 x 512
          Some are 3 channel
          Some are 1 channel"

Note: Get the file 'pho.list' to see descriptions of selected
images, and which are color and which are grey-scale. The
