Good Afternoon,

I'm writing on behalf of the Bessemer Historical Society, on whose Board of
Directors I am our University's designated member. In case you haven't heard
about their wonderful project - I'll give a brief description. The Society
was formed in order to take possession of the enormous and largely
unprocessed corporate archive of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation. As
most of you will know, the CF&I was not only a major influence on Pueblo and
Southern Colorado, but also on the entire region. At one time, it was the
largest steel producer west of the Mississippi River and the largest
landholder in Colorado. Some of the early players included Palmer,
Rockefeller, Corwin, and others. The records in this collection are vast and
encompass everything from industrial to corporate to labor history,
including the Ludlow Massacre.
This is one of the largest corporate archives in the country and has already
attracted researchers from around the world. The Society has made great
progress in beginning to centralize and organize the records, which were in
terrible conditions in a variety of buildings. They recently were awarded an
NEH grant of approximately $250,000 to help them continue processing the
collection. Currently they have two archivists and two archives technicians
on the staff, as well as a number of student interns and community
volunteers. They have been very lucky recently to have the library staff of
Tutt Library at Colorado College volunteer their time to the project. Still,
the needs involved with this project are daunting. BHS was very thankful to
also receive shelving from Colorado College when they replaced traditional
shelving with movable shelving. However, they still desperately need more
shelving to enable them to store records and to simply, in many cases, get
records off the floors and into more stable conditions. Similarly, the need
for map storage cases is very great. Most of the maps in the collection are
from the mining departments and contain very valuable geological
information.

This is a non-profit group that is affiliated with our University and has a
strong educational mission. If you have any shelving or map cases you could
give to the Society, they would appreciate it very much.
Additionally, any other items you may have to donate that could be useful in
a library, archives, or museum setting would be very welcome and if you
would like to volunteer, your efforts would be a great help.

For more information, see their Website:
http://www.cfisteel.org/index.php?pr=Home_Page.

To donate shelving, map cases, or other items, contact Jay Trask, BHS
Archivist at [log in to unmask] or 719.561.6134.

Sincerely,
Rhonda Gonzales
