John, a quick clarification -- these are scanned paper maps and not,
say, aerial photos, is that right? We're doing some work here at Purdue
on automating the georeferencing of aerial photos but we're quite a
distance from applying the same principles to doing more variable
collections like paper map scans.

Let me know if your project will include aerial photos (from the usual
sources, I mean -- FSA, USDA, etc.).
