This might help Darius in making a decision.
 
The June 1/June 15, 1993 (combined issue) of Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin
contains an Atlas Comparison Chart of nine world atlases that have been
published in 1992.  It covers cost, # of pages, # of map pages, # of 2-page
maps, # of index entries, projections and scales used, and supplemental
materials/introductory materials.  It also includes the citation to the
review of the atlas in Reference Books Bulletin.  The comparison chart can
be found on page 1903 of the above issue.
