The Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative is a great example of
historians and other "soft science" types using various mapping
technologies to represent data:

I've got a Masters in History, and I can tell you back in the stone
age (early 90s) many historians were obsessed with maps, particularly
those who studied nationalism in areas like Eastern Europe.
