     Introduction to Dendroecology

     February 24-25, 2000

     Workshop Description:
This two day introductory workshop will describe the concept of
tree-ring analysis using skeleton plotting and crossdating
techniques. The course will cover equipment required, field
techniques, how to `choose' study trees, increment core collection
and transport, core mounting and sanding, skeleton plotting and
crossdating, and the use of computer programs for quality control
and chronology development. The first day of the workshop will
cover all items through sanding procedures in the morning. The
afternoon will be spent in the field collecting cores and beginning
core preparation in the lab. The second day of the workshop will
be devoted to skeleton plotting and crossdating cores, measuring
ring widths, and running COFECHA (a program designed to
verify/assist with crossdating accuracy). The final portion of the
workshop will consist of running ARSTAN ( a program designed to
develop a species/site chronology from the collection of individual
cores). Workshop participants will need to bring clothes
appropriate for field activities, including sturdy boots and
     raingear.
