The ability to produce attractive, well-designed maps with Geographic
Information Systems is not just a matter of technology. Remarkably little
GIS training includes training in the basics of cartographic design. As
a result, too many GIS experts are design ignorant. Until GIS educators
realize that design is an integral part of cartographic presentation, I'm
afraid that most maps produced using Geographic Information Systems
will be ugly and ineffective for all but the most specialized uses.
