To allow interested individuals more time to apply, we have reopened the
cartographic position competition at the University of Western Ontario,
London, Ontario.  Competition closes on Wednesday, January 24, 2001.  The
position is already vacated; we hope to fill it as soon as possible.

While the position description below specifies 5-10 years experience we
will consider those with less experience.  You will notice the term
'Continuing' as part of the 'Type of Appointment' description -
'Continuing'  means that it is a full-time position.

Position Title/Classification: Graphics Specialist 1 (Level 6)

Department: Geography

Salary Range Minimum: $35,101.  (Normal maximum salary: $42, 959)

Type of Appointment: Continuing (37.5 hours/week)

Position Summary:
The Cartographer is responsible for fulfilling the complex cartographic and
graphic needs of
geography faculty members in support of their research activities, and the
publication quality
custom campus mapping needs of the university community at large. The
incumbent will also act as a joint web-master for the Geography Department
site.



Minimum Qualifications:

Formal Education:
4 year Honours degree in Geography or cartography, with courses in statistics.

Experience:
5 to 10 years' experience as a professional cartographer working relatively
independently in a
professional cartographic facility.

Skills:
Excellent working knowledge and application of several Macintosh software
programs (including Adobe
Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, map projection software, and spreadsheet
software) used to assist
in the visualization of spatial concepts and to generate final publication
quality materials; some
working knowledge of any geographic information system software package and
of Windows
operating system; demonstrated ability to work creatively, accurately and
with  versatility under
consistent pressure; ability to work efficiently and effectively both
independently and as part of a
team; ability and willingness to continually develop skills to meet the
creative demands of the
position.

Other:
The successful candidate must enjoy a challenge, be imaginative, be open to
new ideas, and be
capable of generating new approaches to the visualization of research concepts.
