15,000 Online Maps at New Website

http://www.davidrumsey.com/collections/

More than 15,000 maps can now be viewed at the new website “Visual
Collections: Images of Art, History and Culture.” It includes images
from the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, Charting the Nation
(University of Edinburgh), Maps of Africa and the Stanford Geological
Survey (Stanford University), Japanese Historical Maps (East Asian
Library, University of California, Berkeley) and the Florida and Rare
map collections from the University of South Florida.

In all, more than 300,000 images from over 30 collections are included
on the site. Images are viewed using the Insight® Browser with no
download required, or the Insight® Java Client with advanced
functionality, requiring one time download. The collections can be
searched individually
with the Insight Browser or Java Client. With the Insight Java Client
cross-collection searching can be done. Maps can be viewed with fine
art, photographs, and other cultural objects.
Both viewers offer the following features:
· Advanced search function
· High resolution zoom in tool
· Ability to view multiple images simultaneously
· Detailed image descriptions

Image categories are: cartography, fine arts, architecture, photography
and “other.”
