Paul,

I thought something like this might be happening. In November I received
a call from Sanborn (EDR is the new owner) asking about the possibility
of microfilming any Sanborn editions we might have that were not on
microfilm already. They also wanted to obtain a listing of other city
atlases that we might have. If you saw the e-mail following yours, from
Kathryn Womble, Sanborn has been given an infusion of cash from EDR
and wants to make some money from their former trash. This could be
serious if they press the matter. So far, I have not replied to their
request. I'd be interested in the experiences of others.

I am somewhat surprised at both instances referred to here. First, I
cannot imagine why it would take two years to "film and reformat" the
Sanborn maps of Vermont. Second, I do not understand what legal edict EDR
has to reclaim maps from any university. The majority of these maps were
deposited with the Library of Congress based on copyright law and LC,
based on the huge size of this collection, offered their second copies to
numerous state repositories. How this could be construed as continuing to
be owned by the Sanborn Fire Insurance Company, or its successors, is very
interesting.

I know that we would not loan our maps for any such extended period of
time. If the collection is that substantial it would seem to make
considerable sense to have the microfilmer move their staff and equipment
to Vermont for a period of time.

This is an issue that I believe we might all be very interested in
following?
