PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
Digital Cartography Specialist
 
Reporting directly to the Head of the Harvard Map Collection and responsible
for providing a wide variety of students and faculty access to digital
cartographic services of the Harvard Map Collection.  These services include
assisting patrons scanning historical maps into digital products; providing
reference assistance to the cartographic CD-ROM collection; assisting in the
production of basic thematic mapping using ArcView and MapInfo; custom map
creation to complex GIS integration and analysis support for student and
faculty research; maintaining the Harvard Map Collection website, and
ordering new digital cartography.  The person will also be responsible for
installing new CD-ROM's on the public computer cluster; managing student
reservations for time and space; and providing reference assistance within
the map collection.  The Harvard Map Collection, the oldest map collection
in America, is home to over 400,000 maps, 15,000 atlases and books, hundreds
of digital cartographic files, and a GIS computer cluster.  The collection
is also home to the innovative and interactive Massachusetts Electronic Atlas.
 
Qualifications:  A bachelor's degree in geography, graphic design, computer
science, or related discipline.  Experience in digital cartographic design
and scanning software preferred.  Basic skills in ArcView, MapInfo,
Maptitude or other PC based GIS software.  Excellent public service attitude
and desire to work with a diverse clientele.  Experience working in a
Windows NT environment, with Microsoft Office suite of products, with
software installation, and printer/plotter maintenance preferred.  Excellent
oral, written, and graphic communication skills with experience in needs
assessment and creating instructional documentation.
 
Compensation:  Appointment salary dependent on qualifications, low-mid 30s.
