Since this is National Library week, I thought you all might enjoy seeing
this list. It was compiled by one of our University of Florida Librarians.
I remember a few years ago members of MAPS-L were offering suggestions
concerning maps or images that were the focal point of books and movies.
Did anyone gather these together into a list? I remember a remote sensing
image played a pivotal role in one of Clive Cussler's books. Also does
anyone know of any fiction where a Map Library has been the setting?

Just a little diversion for those involved in stressful situations or have
too many deadlines.
Helen

Subject: National Library Week -- Entertainment @ Your Library!

  Entertainment @ the library!

Librarians and Library Workers in the Movies
(Thanks to the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/ for help with
locating titles! There are many
more than the small sample here.)

  Librarian Heroines
  Desk Set -- 1957
The classic library movie, starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.
When computer expert Richard
Sumner plans to replace the research department with his computer,
department head Bunny Watson declares
war (and of course, falls in love.)

The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag -- 1992
Betty Lou (Penelope Ann Miller) is a library assistan who witnesses a
murder and retrieves the murder
weapon. When the police bring her in, and her huband, a detective,
belittles her yet again, she confesse to the
murder, and becomes an instant celebrity.

  Music Man -- 1962
When Harold Hill (Richard Preston) leaps off the train in River City,
Iowa, to bilk its citizens, only librarian
Marian Paroo (Shirley Jones) has the bound periodicals that can expose the
scam. But when Hill turns out to
be a scoundrel with a heart of gold, will she vandalize library materials
in the name of true love?

  Party Girl -- 1995
Mary (Parker Posey) finally has to get an honest job, so she becomes a
library page, and slowly discovers
there *is* a purpose to the Dewey Decimal System. Should be declared the
official film of ALA.

  Storm Center -- 1956
Librarian Alicia Hull (Bette Davis) refuses to withdraw a Communist book
from her small-town library and finds
herself at risk of losing her job.

The library has a smaller, but still important role, in these movies:

  Destruction @ your library

  Breakfast Club -- 1985
Don't you forget about this excellent 80s classic -- but don't look too
closely at what happens to the card
  catalog! Which brings to mind..

  Ghostbusters -- 1984
The audience screamed! At the slime? At the special effects? At the
repetitive music? No! It was a class of
library students, and everyone was thinking: Who's going to refile all
those cards?

  Mummy --1999
Adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) is certainly easy on the eyes,
and librarian Evie Carnahan (Rachel
Weisz) may be able to find the ultimate rare book (made of solid gold) if
she follows him through the desert.
But is that why she went? Or was she simply trying to avoid reshelving the
library stacks she tipped over?
