A patron has questions regarding the CPL copy of the Ohio portion of
A Map of Virginia by Bishop James Madison 1807 (or possibly the 1818
edition).
CPL's copy was received as a gift about 4 years ago. Since we only rec'd
the Ohio sheet and since we were curious about its excellent condition
for a map of that age, we had our Preservation Lab do a pH test. The
conservator found our copy to be on highly acidic paper not common prior
to about 1850. Because she was unfamilar with publishing practices
in 19th century Richmond where the map was published she hesitated
to rule out the earlier date however.
OCLC does not list many holdings, does anyone else own or have
you recently received a copy of either the full 6/9 map sheets or only
the Ohio portion? You can reply to me or to the list as you feel
appropriate.
