Dear Matthew,

In 1991 I published the following report, which includes the statistics and diagrams:

Report on the 'Inquiry into map-use and user habits in Europe'
In: ERLC the Liber quarterly, 1.1991.3, p. 283-310.

The research took place in 1988/1989 and had some 4,000 respondents in some 10 European countries.

The report is not available online, but when you can't find any library which owns it I'll try to send you a hardcopy.

With kind regards,

Jan Smits

For a special short project I'm undertaking could anyone point me to
resaerch in the user needs of map users?

I've found these:
http://www.kb.nl/infolev/liber/articles/12stevenson.html
http://www.kb.nl/infolev/liber/articles/1parry.htm
http://www.ncgia.ucsb.edu/other/ucgis/research_priorities/paper4.html

Can someone point me to classics in the field?

This is in aid of an internet application, but traditional uses are the
background I'd like to touch on, as well.
