The University of Kansas seeks a talented and enthusiastic individual to
manage the T.R. Smith Map Collection, located in Anschutz Library on the
University's main (Lawrence) Campus. The Map Librarian closely
collaborates with the reference specialist for data services and the GIS
and Numeric Data Specialist to support GIS activities. The Map Librarian
reports to the Co-Coordinators of Reference Services.

Responsibilities
· Manages all operations of the T.R. Smith Map Collection; supervises
one classified staff member.
· Provides reference, collection development, and instructional services
for the map collection.
· Provides collection development, liaison, and instructional services
for geography and geology.
· Participates in appropriate work and management groups within the KU
Libraries.
· Collaborates with the reference specialist for data services and the
GIS and Numeric Data Specialist to support GIS activities, including the
new GIS and Numeric Data Lab.
· Collaborates with staff in the KU Digital Library Initiative to
support digitization projects pertinent to maps and cartographic
resources.
· Participates in service and scholarly activities in keeping with the
tenure standards of the University of Kansas Libraries.

Required Qualifications:   Master's degree from an ALA-accredited
program.  Academic coursework in geography, cartography, or related
fields.  Demonstrated knowledge of maps and cartographic resources.
Knowledge of computing technology as it applies to map collections.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience or course work related to
geographic information systems (GIS), and digital spatial data.
Understanding of regional depository requirements for map collections.
Experience in the acquisition, organization, management, and
preservation of cartographic materials within a research library
setting.  Experience with staff training and/or user instruction.
Experience providing public service for map collections.  Collection
development experience.  Supervisory experience.  Reading knowledge of
at least one foreign language.

Salary & Benefits:  Highly competitive salary range ($35,000 minimum),
dependent upon qualifications.  Benefits include 22 days vacation and 12
days sick leave per year; several paid holidays; group health and life
insurance options; choice of four retirement programs; and eligibility
to apply for sabbatical leave.

Terms of Appointment:  This is a tenure-track library faculty position.
Librarians at the University of Kansas are members of the University
faculty and are appointed to the ranks of Librarian I, Librarian II, or
Librarian III, dependent on professional experience in the field of
librarianship.  Librarians participate in the Library Faculty Assembly
and are members of the University Faculty Council.  Librarians are
evaluated annually first and foremost on the performance of professional
responsibilities.  In addition, librarians are expected to participate
in, and are evaluated on, professional service and research.

Environment:  The T.R. Smith Map Collection is the 10th largest academic
map collection in the country, with over 400,000 map sheets. Map
coverage is comprehensive with emphasis on the United States and on the
twentieth century. The Map Collection is a depository for U.S.
Geological Survey maps and also receives maps from the U.S. Government
Printing Office as a Regional Depository library. In addition to
developing and maintaining an excellent collection of printed
cartographic materials and spatial data, the KU Libraries are also
collaborating with other campus groups to develop GIS and numeric data
services.

Anschutz Library is a multidisciplinary research library comprised of
collections including the sciences, government information, business and
economics, geography and geology, and the T.R. Smith Map Collection.
Anschutz houses approximately 750,000 volumes, 2.2 million government
publications, and 3,500 active serial subscriptions, and offers a
comprehensive array of services, including a 24-hour study facility, a
laptop checkout program, wireless networking and a new instruction
classroom.

The University of Kansas Libraries constitute a major academic and
research resource supporting approximately 25,000 students and 1,300
faculty.   The Libraries' collections comprise approximately 3.3 million
volumes and 27,000 current serial titles, housed in six library
facilities in Lawrence and one library in suburban Kansas City. The
Libraries have a budget of $14 million and a staff of 71 library faculty
and professional staff, 76 paraprofessionals, and 80 FTE of student
workers.  The University is located in Lawrence, a diverse community of
more than 75,000 set in the rolling hills of northeast Kansas, 40 miles
from Kansas City. Lawrence and KU offer a wide range of cultural and
recreational activities, and the Libraries play a vital role in the
intellectual life of the community.
