Camila,

Melbourne Uni had 200 or so we wanted to get rid of.: both
physical/political geography maps and historical ones ("Classical Athens"/
"Europe in 1648" etc). I emailed out history, geograpy, language and
classics depts and asked them to distribute the message to their staff
students that the maps were available for anyone to take, and the
remainder would be chucked by the end of the week.

Within an hour we had a rush on our hands with postgrads after stuff to
liven their office's and flat's walls, staff aftrer maps to illustrate
lectures, and several contacted schools they knew and our best ones, a
series of German historical maps, including Nazi Germany, 1648, 1815 etc,
went to a big private grammar school who knew their worth.

We got rid of a pileof maps very rapidly and easily without having to
throw any but the most torn and dirty in the bin, and we made a lot of
friends, and alerted a lot of people to the fact that the map collection
existed!
A great PR exercise, and a great saving of landfill space to the city!
