Since the railroads do not offer passenger service anymore (since the
1971 nationalization of passenger service into AMTRAK), I don't
recall heving seen railroad maps for public distribution of much more
recent vintage, Network maps are availableas part of AMTRAK brochures
and on their web site at http://www.amtrak.com. A variety of
regional (mostly public) agencies have maps showing commuter and
rapid transit systems, again on the web or in print schedules. These
you have to get agency by agency.
Steam Powered Video has produced an exhaustive series of rail line
atlases, available through Map Link or direct from them at
http://www.spv.co.uk/acatalog/atlases_f.htm .
We produce a map of Northeast USA Passenger Rail, showing Amtrak,
commuter and rapid transit from Maine to Virginia, along with tourist
railroads and ferries, with details of major cities.

Finally, many US states produce railroad line maps for their states,
usually one-color flat sheets. These are useful references for active
lines, regardless of passenger or freight usage.
