Federal Geographic Data Committee Announces Funding Opportunities for
National Spatial Data Infrastructure Cooperative Agreements Program

RESTON, VA, January 15, 2002 ? The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC)
will begin accepting proposals for the 2001 National Spatial Data
Infrastructure Cooperative Agreements Program (CAP).

The CAP program provides seed funds to the GIS community to build the
National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) for the effective discovery,
sharing, managing, and utilization of digital geographic data.

The CAP will fund projects in four areas:

(1) Metadata Creation and Implementation Projects: provides assistance to
organizations in acquiring knowledge of metadata documentation and
assistance for creating metadata for service over the Internet. Metadata is
a basic first step in implementing the NSDI.

(2) Metadata Trainer Assistance Projects: funds trainers to train
organizations in metadata implementation.

(3) Clearinghouse Integration with OpenGIS Services: funds projects to
extend existing clearinghouse nodes with OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) compliant
web mapping service capabilities and related standards-based services in a
consistent way.

(4) Joint Canadian/US Spatial Data Infrastructure Project: funds Canadian
and U.S. organizations who are collaborating in order to share, create and
maintain geospatial data over a common geography.

For more information on the CAP program application materials and
instructions, and NSDI background information go to
http://www.fgdc.gov/funding/cap2002.html or
http://www.usgs.gov/contracts/FGDC.

The open period for submission of proposals closes March 15, 2002.
