The Freycinet Map of 1811

The 200th Anniversary of the Publication of the First Map of Australia

Presented by the Australia on the Map Division of the Australasian
Hydrographic Society, in association with the Embassy of France

This year marks the bicentenary of the publication of the first map of
Australia, compiled by French navigator and cartographer Louis de
Freycinet.
The map, published in Paris in 1811, showed the full outline of
Australia three years before the publication of Matthew Flinders’ "A
Voyage to Terra Australia".
This symposium is one of the highlights of the anniversary commemorations.

Notable speakers include Emeritus Professor Margaret Sankey, Rupert
Gerritsen, Professor Jean Fornasiero, Associate Professor John
West-Sooby and Henry de Freycinet.
