In our collection at California State University, Fresno, we play
it by ear, so to speak. It depends on the quality of the paper, how
easily the item is flattened, etc., as to whether we put it in with
the flat maps or in the vertical file. Also, we need to be sure
that the cover will not damage other items in the drawer and that
the map is still easily slipped out for use.
When I started retrospectively cataloging our collection, I was
dismayed to find a lot of maps that had been separated from their
covers (and, hence, from the information that the cataloguer needs.)
Handling these *orphans* was something of a challenge. For the sake
of your cataloguer, I hope you are not planning on discarding the
covers.
