I don't have a strategy but what you have described is very common. There
can be ww coal mine 3 and mine 4, etc. In the old days, they used to, in
some cases, refer to each portal as a separate mine. So you could walk down
the outcrop where the entries were and each would be numbered. I have often
heard the phase "working in the mines" which, I think, is where the phase
comes from, multiple entries on the same seam.
For suggestions, I refer you to Geological Survey of Alabama's circular 130
- Directory of Underground Coal Mines in Alabama. They categorized by
company, s-t-r, county, mine, coal bed and reference date. I see a listing
for a Sibley mining, dated 1958, 59, 62, 63 with 15 different mines such as
Caserock 1, Caserock 2, Caserock 95 and a Caserock 14 1/2.

I am in the process of cataloging a large collection of coal mine maps
from the Western Maryland area, and am running into difficulty in
establishing authorities for the coal mine names.
I have been using Annual Reports and other sources mainly from the
Maryland Bureau of Mines to verify the names. Unfortunately, many of
the companies simply give numbered names such as "Mine No. 3" and "No. 5
Mine". (So, it is possible to have something like this:
Mine No. 3 (in Allegany County, owned by W & W Coal Company)
No. 3 Mine (In Allegany County, owned by George's Creek Coal Company)
Mine No. 3 (In Garrett County, owned by Moran Coal Company)
(etc.)
I've reviewed LSCH Subject Cataloging Manual, but could not come away
with any clear guidelines. I considered adding the company name to the
mine, such as "W & W Coal Company Mine No. 3", but these mines have
changed hands through the years, and "W & W" may not always be the
company that owned that mine!
Does anybody have experience with a situation like this, or have
suggestions for a naming strategy when the names are very likely to be
duplicated as I continue through the collection?
Any assistance with this is greatly appreciated!
