UW Milwaukee has an ALA accredited Masters of Information Studies
program that offers a dual major in Geography and Information Studies.
Nearly all students participating in the dual program take advantage of
the AGSL facilities by doing a fieldwork study or internship at our map
library. There is a cataloging internship here at the AGSL under my
supervision. This internship is currently filled through the summer of
2006 but I'll be hiring a new intern beginning Fall 2006. There are
other student employment opportunities here and we love to hire the dual
major students because they are so talented and capable of taking on big
projects that help us and the student.

*There is a class on cartographic resources in libraries (683
Cartographic Resources in Libraries. 3 cr. U/G. The nature, variety, and
history of cartographic resources. How these fit into the world of
information and how they differ from traditional library materials.
Prereq: jr st; cons instr.)

Paige et al.,
Actually, UMD doesn't appear to have any particular focus on map
librarianship per se. The College
of Information Studies advertises a "GeLS" program, a degree in
Geography and Library Science, but
their admin office just told me that they're no longer accepting new
applicants, and that the number
of currently enrolled students is quite small. Too bad. :(

All,

I need some assistance with the following question. The only Library school
I'm aware of with some kind of focus on map librarianship (or at least the
only one I can remember with this addled brain of mine) is the University
of Maryland. Thanks for you help!

Paige

Question:
One of our student assistants will be graduating in the summer with a B.S.
in Geography. I mentioned the career track of map librarian/map cataloger
to her, and she is interested in learning more about career opportunities
in this field. Can you provide any information or point us to Web
sites? Is there an MLS degree program that is strong in map cataloging?
