Chris, these atlases are indeed part of the collection of the long-time
head of the Geology Department there, who also worked for the Iowa
Geological Survey and for whom the geology building is named. The
collection also has 67 (!) copies of a geologic map of Linn County, done
by none other than the aforementioned Professor Norton.

I have gotten some responses from people interested in specific states,
so will gather up and forward the information to yesterday's caller.
And I will especially note that <some> atlases might be worth more, and
that the caller should check online for going prices.

Thanks! Any more interest in specific states, etc., please send me a
message off the list.

Linda,

While you're absolutely correct about depository items, it is possible
that the library in question did not receive them through the FDLP. We
receive gifts of the geologic atlases all the time. If they are gifts,
they can dispose of them as they please. But if they are stamped
depository, by law they can only be given to another institution or be
recycled. Shame, but that's the system.

FYI: The Yellowstone Folio (#30) is worth $1,000!!!!!!! I think the
Black Hills (#219) is also worth a few bucks. The other valuable ones
are of mining areas in the West, and NYC. In general, the other folios
sell in our book sale from $5-20. The valuable ones go for $50-100.
The Yellowstone, in great condition, a few hundred. Of course, as with
anything, you have to find the right buyer. Considering the value of
the Yellowstone folio, it is worth holding on to in order to find the
right buyer.

Also, Texas A&M has scanned all the folios.

Hpe this helps.

Hello,

The legal requirements of the Depository program
(http://www.fdlp.gov/component/docman/doc_download/1984-legal-requirements-and-program-regulations-of-the-federal-depository-liibrary-program),
which replaces the Federal Depository Library Handbook, states:

"Tangible depository publications supplied to depository libraries are
Federal government property. Depository publications must be retained
and kept accessible for at least the minimum retention period. Materials
may only be disposed of through appropriate withdrawal mechanisms. These
include:
1. 'Five-year rule': a minimum retention period of five years from date
of receipt, processing, or shipping list date (for selective libraries),
2. Supersession (for all libraries), 3. Tangible substitution for
tangible publications (for all libraries), and 4. Official online
substitution for tangible publications (for selective libraries)."

Given that these probably came through the Depository Library Program
(or some other Federal Depository Program), I am not sure that it is
legal to sell these, as they are still technically Federal Property. If
the library has proof that they were purchased or received from a donor
who purchased them, then they would probably be able to sell them.

Colleagues, a near-by college is running out of room and is interested
in selling some 300 USGS state atlases, published from the 1890s to the
1920s-obviously multiples. We are not interested as we have them for all
states, although these might be in better shape than ours. Not sure what
price they would ask for an atlas...

Failing that, do any of you know reputable vendors that would be
interested in selling these atlases?

Thank you for any insights you can share.
