There are several companies in Denver that buy topos over the counter at
the Federal Center and then FedEx them to customers. At hand is an ad from
Speedy Topo, 303-499-0569.

In addition, MapLink in Santa Barbara, Calif., has many quads in stock for
immediate delivery.

It will be easier for you to order if you know the quadrangle name.
Federal depository libraries should have the topo index for Florida; in
fact, you can probably see the map and photocopy it right there at the
library.

Vin,

One company that provides such a service is

     Multimedia Backpacking Unlimited, Inc.
     Route 67, Box 168-D
     Culowhee, Nc. 28723
     (800) 646-7225
     (704) 293-9178
     e.mail [log in to unmask]
     WWW homepage http://www.dnet.net:80/mbu/topo.html

I will include below a review of this company's service that I wrote
about 6 months ago for another discussion list. The areas covered have
grown significantly since the writing of the review; check with their WWW
homepage for current info. I have no affiliation with this company other
than being a satisfied customer. The original market for this company
appears to have been for heavily used hiking areas, but they have provided
me maps for other areas as well. Apologies for the very long post.

<Fellow TAG-NET members, (A speleology group)
<
< Ordering USGS 7 1/2 min. Topo maps is the first step for me in
planning <any outdoor activity, including underground activities. Access to
maps has <always been difficult for me. Ordering from the government by
land mail is <slow and local sources frequently do not stock the Quadrangles
that I need. <Even when I lived in Denver, the trip to the USGS warehouse
in Lakewood <generally took the better part of a morning (I'm like a "kid in
a candy store" <when I go to a map shop).

< I was encouraged when I gained access to the WWW this spring and
<learned that there is a plan by the USGS to put some of their Topo maps on
<the internet for downloading. I was discouraged, however, when I learned
that <the time table for converting the maps for most of the areas that I
am interested <is for the year 2000.
<
< I found a similar service today on the World Wide Web provided by a
<private company that appears to offer a similar service, but with a more
<responsive time frame. I have NO AFFILIATION with this company and <offer
this information as a service to the discussion group. This type of access
<is valuable to me in an overseas position where delivery of Mail is
<undependable, slow, and expensive. This service may be of use to
State-side <members as well. Being able to down load a map in 5 minutes
after you decide <that you want it is great.
<
< The company's name is Multimedia Backpacking Unlimited, Inc.
< Route 67, Box 168-D

<
< They provide GIF format scans of the topo maps and make 9 individual
<files of each 7 1/2 min. Quad map. The files are available over the
internet or <by delivery in US Mail on Floppies. The prices are competitive
with the price <of purchacing and postage on paper maps.
<
< I downloaded an example Quad in 9 files, each about 300-450 kilobytes
<and found the images to be better than I have been able to make myself. (I
<spent about 2 days with an apple flat bed scanner on a project scanning
topo <maps with various settings). Based on the quality that I saw from the
example <which I downloaded, I immediately made an order for 4 quads.
<
< IN MY OPINION this looks like a good service, the price is very
<competitive with the cost of buying, and having paper maps delivered. With
<GIF files many graphics programs can print multiple maps and you can add
<graphics of your own creation such as trail routes. On the other hand,
the <company does appear to be a relatively new venture and as of this date
the <number of on-line maps is limited to about 200 files from heavily hiked
areas. <They seem ready to make orders and scans of any new requests but
the turn <around time will obviously be longer. I was happy to find that
they have the <Howardsville Co. Quad on line. This map covers one of the
more interesting <of the abandoned mine areas of San Juan Co., Colorado
(Highland Mary, <Pride of the West, Old Hundred, Morning Star and others).
<
< This company seems to be targeting hikers with their initial marketing
<campaign, but interest from cavers might redirect their scanning plans.

USGS Map Conversions

Many professionals who use USGS topographical maps on a daily basis can
benefit
from our map conversion services. IMT uses state of the art technology to
convert
USGS quadrangles and other topographical maps into digital form. The
client will
experience significant cost savings from using our conversion services
rather than
reproducing the maps themselves because our process is typically up to
five times faster
than board digitization and more accurate than board digitazation.

Our digital map conversions can be customized to the clients' unique
specifications
allowing for immediate use. The client may specify coverage areas,
features to be
converted (e.g. contours, transportation, hydrography, public land survey
information,
etc.), rubbersheeting to specific control points, intergration with other
map data, edge
   matching, and map projection.

IMT is located adjacent to the US Geological Survey Earth Science
Information Center
in Denver, Colorado. Our close proximity to ESIC allows us to provide
price quotations
in a matter of a few hours, not days. Call 1-800-988-4562 or
(303)-988-4274 for a
phone quote or if you need further information about these services.
