It seems to me that this animation doesn't allow for the flights reaching their destinations (and thus ending).  They all sort of fill up in Europe and North America, like ants unable to continue their march.  100,000 (though a huge number) flights spread over the world in a 24 hour period cannot possibly fill up two continents as fully ans this 'simulation' suggests.  This is rather the Flying Dutchman version of airline flight.

Ah, yes, this is an interesting map.  But note that the flights are
plotted on a cylindrical projection centered on the equator.  I see
that no flights on their animated map go over the Arctic.  What
happened to the shortest routes on a spherical Earth?
